What are Heating and Cooling Rebates and Tax Credits in Michigan?

In Michigan, there are two options for heating and cooling rebates. The one you can apply for depends on which local energy company serves your home: Consumers Energy or DTE Energy

Consumers Energy

For Consumers Energy’s rebate, you are only eligible if you are a Consumers Energy residential customer receiving electric and/or natural gas. They offer rebates for the following heating and cooling equipment:

  • Natural Gas Furnaces: you can receive up to $300 for units with an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of 97% or higher.
  • Air Source Heat Pumps: Up to $300 for systems with a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2 (SEER2) rating of 15.2 or higher.
  • Central Air Conditioners: Up to $300 for systems rated 16 SEER2 or higher.
  • Ductless Mini-Splits: Up to $65, depending on the efficiency level of the system. The more efficient the unit, the higher the rebate tier.

In some cases, Consumers Energy offers a rebate for a comprehensive heating and cooling system tune-up and maintenance.

To apply for rebates from Consumers Energy, you’ll need to ensure your system was installed by an authorized company. The application must be submitted within 30 days of installation.

At K&B Energy, we have extensive knowledge of local rebates for heating and cooling units, including manufacturer rebates, and can help you submit your application.

DTE Energy

DTE offers their own rebates for residential customers receiving electric and/or natural gas. These include:

  • Natural Gas Furnaces: Up to $400 for units with an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of 98% or higher.
  • Air Source Heat Pumps: Up to $1,200 for qualifying, high-efficiency Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pumps (CCASHP).
  • Central Air Conditioners: Up to $300 for systems rated 18 SEER2 or higher.
  • Ductless Mini-Splits: Up to $1,000, depending on the efficiency level of the system.

For heating and cooling maintenance and tune-ups, you can receive up to $145 in reimbursement for a diagnostic furnace tune up or combustion analysis.

Similar to Consumers Energy, DTE requires you to have your unit installed by an authorized company in order to qualify. The contractor typically submits the application paperwork online on your behalf.

Be sure to ask your heating and cooling contractors about any additional manufacturer rebates or programs that you may qualify for. An experienced company can help you apply for all rebates in your area, preparing the documentation for federal and state programs. They can ensure you get the maximum rebate amounts.
